Kingsbury Oil Palm

Oil Palmwood trunks are a valuable resource but there are some problems’ not the least of which is the high amount of water and silicone in the wood. Add to this the extreme density distribution and you have a completely different structure to what we know as “normal” wood. In fact, oil palms are not botanically classified as wood, but as grass. There is currently very little know-how in technology and knowledge in the processing of Oil Palm Wood. All this makes for challenging to turn or handcraft into anything.

There is a motel on Kingsbury Street in Seguin, after which the wood is named, where several Oil Palms were cut down as a part of a remodeling project. The trunks were set aside for disposal so I helped myself to a few pieces. This constitutes the entire stock of Salt Shaker Woodworks Oil Palm.
