Allen American Elm

IMG_2856.jpg

American Elm is a little on the rare side because the supply of it is still threatened by the devastating Dutch Elm tree disease, introduced to this country in 1930, which has killed hundreds of thousands of trees. American Elm lumber is still available, although at moderately high prices .

Salt Shaker Woodworks supply of American Elm was purchased from a neighbor for whom we named the wood. Mr. Allen was a woodworker himself until health issues forced him to stop. Like me, Mr. Allen spent years gathering wood for use in his shop but needed to get rid of it since he could no longer make use of it. I bought all the stock he had, much of which was reclaimed like this American Elm which was taken from a tree that blew down in his neighbor’s yard during Hurricane Harvey. I was very fortunate to find Mr. Allen when I did. He had been trying to sell his stock for a while with no takers so he was on the verge of dumping or burning all of it.
