Allen Cherry

IMG_2858.jpg

The heartwood of Cherry varies from rich red to reddish-brown and will darken with age and on exposure to light. In contrast, the sapwood is creamy white. The wood has a straight grain, a fine uniform satiny and smooth texture, and naturally may contain brown pith flecks and small gum pockets. Sources run throughout Midwestern and Eastern U.S. Main commercial areas are Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and New York. Cherry is easy to machine, nails and glues well, and when sanded and stained, it produces an excellent, smooth finish

Almost all of Salt Shaker Woodworks stock of this beautiful and very popular wood came from Mr. Allen, for whom this Cherry is named. Mr. Allen was a woodworker himself until health issues forced him to stop. Like me, Mr. Allen spent years gathering wood for use in his shop but now needed to get rid of it. I bought all the stock he had, much of which was reclaimed like this Cherry that came from a neighbor’s fairly large downed tree. I was very fortunate to find Mr. Allen when I did. He had been trying to sell his stock for a while with no takers so he was on the verge of dumping or burning all of it.
